Well, the answer is, we don’t know. At present European Palm Pre owners are stuck behind their American compatriots, languishing in the Beta version of Palm’s App Catalog with only a fraction of the amount of apps our friends across the pond are enjoying. The reason? We don’t have access to paid apps.

The Pre in the UK is limited to only free apps which might sound like a good thing to smartphone users on a budget but does in fact rule out a huge percentage of the full app store. The most notable exclusions are the wave of 3D games that launched with the WebOS 1.3 update at the beginning of the year. With nearly 2000 apps available to US Pre owners and a paltry 482 in the UK app catalog, the gulf between the two regions is hardly minute.

But, this could all be set to change as Palm have confirmed that today is the day us lucky UK Pre owners will be getting the full app store with paid apps to boot. No word on what time we can expect this to roll out (our American friends are only just starting their working day) but judging by previous updates it could be any time up until this evening. Some eagle eyed users were able to spot an app with a price tag in the app store earlier this morning but this has since been removed. However, the Beta tag has disappeared permanently so this definitely looks like a step in the right direction.

If you’ve been able to update your phone and enjoy the full App Catalog on your Palm Pre anywhere outside of the United States, let us know in the comments section below.

UPDATE: WebOS 1.4.1 update now available, bringing with it paid apps to European Palm Pre users!

Pay at Starbucks (in Target) With Your iPhone

Augmented reality apps are coming thick and fast in the iPhone’s app store and it seems you just can’t get enough of them. The idea behind augmented reality apps is quite simple. Using the iPhone’s camera, apps are able to combine what’s in the viewfinder with various different sources of information, from detailed information about the stars above you with Star Walk to all your local restaurants and fast food joints with AroundMe. Now, we can add another great use of augmented reality to that list with the arrival of Mr.Photo in the app store.

Mr.Photo (Mixed Reality Photo) is the first app to allow texture tracking on the iPhone, allowing you to augment a segment of your surroundings with your own content. In short, add your own images to the real world using the iPhone’s camera. Highly intuitive and simple to use, the Mr.Photo lets you create an endless number of fun and fantastic photos that can then be shared with everyone through the app itself. Simply define and set the texture you want to add your content to, take a photo, choose what personal content you’d like to add and then when you look at the area using your Mr.Photo app, your content will appear on the pre-defined area.

Create your own billboards in Leicester Square, add your face to famous paintings and much more, your imagination really is the limit. Available in the app store now, free for a limited time only, check it out and start personalising your surroundings today.

When talking about HTC and Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 Series operating system, the hot topic is whether the HTC HD2, HTC’s flagship WinMo device, will be upgradeable to the new OS. The simple answer to this is, no one really knows. And if they do, they’re not telling us. But, before you grow disheartened about the likelihood of an HTC Windows super phone appearing any time soon, HTC’s CEO has confirmed that an all new device is in the pipeline and scheduled for release nefore the end of 2010!

Speaking to reporters at the CTIA conference, HTC head honcho Peter Chou said he is “thrilled” with Windows Phone 7 and that HTC plan to release a device running Redmond’s new OS before the end of the year. The confirmation should also put to rest constant rumours that HTC would be stepping away from Microsoft in the coming months and years. The Speculation had centred on Microsoft’s new hardline on compatibility and customisation of their new OS which will rule out the likes of HTC’s Sense user interface and prohibit devices from running the operating system unless they adhere to strict specification guidlines. Chou’s comments prove that Windows Phone 7 Series is still very much in the companies plans.

Chou also had time to comment on the stateside launch of the Google Nexus One which, despite less than stellar sales figures, he considered a success. Chou commented “Considering Google didn’t do standard retail or marketing for it, the Nexus One is doing pretty well”. Chou believes that the Nexus One (and its stablemate, the HTC Desire) showed the world that HTC is the top Android brand. And now with confirmation that a Windows phone is set to launch in the next 9 months, it seems the company is determined to repeat this success with Windows Phone 7 Series.

Not so long ago, the Motorola Milestone (or Droid for our friends across the pond) was the top dog in the Android world looking down on its compatriots from its Android 2.0 ivory tower. And then came the Google Nexus One (and more recently HTC’s own brand version, the HTC Desire) running Android 2.1, instantly establishing itself as the king of the Android hill. Well fear not Motorola loyalists, your prayers have been answered; the Motorola Milestone has got in on the Android 2.1 action.

Available as an over the air download or downloadable through a wired connection, the update to version 2.1 (or Eclair for pastry enthusiasts) brings with it support for live wallpapers (that switch and change as you navigate through the phone), 9 home screen panels, tweaks and improvements to various apps such as the camera and pre-installed Facebook app and a general performance boost to improve the overall performance of the phone.

Available to download now, click here to update your Milestone or head on over to the updates area on the phone itself. Not got a Milestone and want to find out more? Click here to take a look at the flagship QWERTY Android device in more detail and check out some of our fantastic offers.

Photojournalism Award Judges Use Aperture

At the National Press Photographers Association annual Best of Photojournalism awards, the entire process of viewing and voting for images happened inside Aperture.

Nokia are in the middle of taking over US mobile browser specialist Novarra, with the deal expected to be completed by the second quarter of the year.

Novarra’s technology, which can compress and reformat websites for handsets that can’t display them in their original form, will be used to improve the mobile web experience on Nokia’s cheaper phones, including devices based on the Series 40 platform, according to a statement from the Finnish company.

Wireless internet usage is set to surge in 2010 and beyond thanks to the rise of smartphones, and mobile phone manufacturers and operators continue to keep up with Apple’s iPhone with many manufacturers employing their own browsers.

Niklas Savander, executive vice president of services at Nokia states “Connecting the next billion consumers to the Internet will happen primarily on mobile devices and delivering an optimised internet experience on our devices is core to our mission. By driving innovation in all segments of our portfolio, we are building one of the largest consumer audiences for web services and content. Novarra’s internet services technology delivered on the world’s most widely-used mobile platform, Nokia’s Series 40, will help us achieve this.”

The mobile browsing space has heated up in the last couple of months. Last week Opera Software submitted the iPhone version of its Mini browser to Apple for App Store approval. Also, Mozilla said it has decided to stop the development of a version of its Firefox mobile web browser for phones running Windows Mobile. It will instead concentrate on an upcoming version of Firefox for Android-based phones, and on the existing version of the browser for Maemo, the operating system used in Nokia’s N900.

Nokia said it expects to roll out services based on the newly acquired technology by the end of the year.

Opera Posts Countup Since App Was Submitted to Apple

By the looks of things, and ongoing language from Opera, they aren't too worried about being rejected from the App Store. They've posted a big, huge countup from the time they submitted the Opera Browser to the App Store. I'm guessing Apple doesn't do so well with kind of attitude ...
