Well, the answer is, we don’t know. At present European owners are stuck behind their American compatriots, languishing in the Beta version of Palm’s App Catalog with only a fraction of the amount of apps our friends across the pond are enjoying. The reason? We don’t have access to paid apps.
The Pre in the UK is limited to only free apps which might sound like a good thing to users on a budget but does in fact rule out a huge percentage of the full app store. The most notable exclusions are the wave of 3D games that launched with the WebOS 1.3 update at the beginning of the year. With nearly 2000 apps available to US Pre owners and a paltry 482 in the UK app catalog, the gulf between the two regions is hardly minute.
But, this could all be set to change as Palm have confirmed that today is the day us lucky UK Pre owners will be getting the full app store with paid apps to boot. No word on what time we can expect this to roll out (our American friends are only just starting their working day) but judging by previous updates it could be any time up until this evening. Some eagle eyed users were able to spot an app with a price tag in the app store earlier this morning but this has since been removed. However, the Beta tag has disappeared permanently so this definitely looks like a step in the right direction.
If you’ve been able to update your phone and enjoy the full App Catalog on your anywhere outside of the United States, let us know in the comments section below.
UPDATE: WebOS 1.4.1 update now available, bringing with it paid apps to European Palm Pre users!

Augmented reality apps are coming thick and fast in the app store and it seems you just can’t get enough of them. The idea behind augmented reality apps is quite simple. Using the iPhone’s camera, apps are able to combine what’s in the viewfinder with various different sources of information, from detailed information about the stars above you with Star Walk to all your local restaurants and fast food joints with AroundMe. Now, we can add another great use of augmented reality to that list with the arrival of Mr.Photo in the app store.
Mr.Photo (Mixed Reality Photo) is the first to allow texture tracking on the iPhone, allowing you to augment a segment of your surroundings with your own content. In short, add your own images to the real world using the iPhone’s camera. Highly intuitive and simple to use, the Mr.Photo lets you create an endless number of fun and fantastic photos that can then be shared with everyone through the app itself. Simply define and set the texture you want to add your content to, take a photo, choose what personal content you’d like to add and then when you look at the area using your Mr.Photo app, your content will appear on the pre-defined area.
Create your own billboards in Leicester Square, add your face to famous paintings and much more, your imagination really is the limit. Available in the app store now, free for a limited time only, check it out and start personalising your surroundings today.
