Android touting Acer Stream announced

Announcements of new Android handsets are coming thick and fast, we’ve had the HTC Wildfire, Samsung Galaxy S and Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini to name three of the most recent. Now we have another looking join in on the Android Action, this handset though, comes from a name you wouldn’t necessarily associate with mobile phones; Acer. This isn’t Acer’s first shot at a Smartphone, remember the Acer Liquid? Anyone? Thought not, but it appears it now has a successor, and this looks alot more like the handset we’d hoped for previously…

Presenting the Acer Stream, which has been dubbed as a mobile entertainment dream machine. As far as specs go, here’s what we know: It’ll launch with Android 2.1 (?clair), it will also have a 3.7 Inch AMOLED display with a 2000:1 contrast ratio which without going into the gory details, is very good. There’s also a Qualcomm SnapDragon 1GHz processor lurking under the hood joined by 512MB of RAM which will take care of any day to day tasks without breaking sweat.

The camera is a 5 Megapixel unit, which seems to be fast becoming the norm in Android Smartphones, although, the Stream has the ability to record 720p HD video, straight out of the box. There’s also a mini HDMI port for linking the Acer Stream up to your HDTV to watch the 720p videos in all their HD glory. There’s also 2GB of internal storage and a rumour that the Stream will ship with an 8GB MicroSD card in the box, which takes care of any worries about not having enough space to store your media. If you’re still worried however, fear not, the Stream supports MicroSD storage up to 32GB.

We can’t forget to mention the FM Radio, GPS and what has been referred to as an HTC Sense style User Interface which runs on top of the Android Operating System. It is said that the UI will let you switch between photos and video in a 3D interface that will also apparently carry through to 3D gaming.

With no details about pricing or release date yet, we’re left to deliberate whether the Stream will be the beginning of a fruitful second attempt at breaking into the Smartphone market or whether it will wash up on the banks of ‘easily forgotten phones’ alongside it’s predecessor.

This device is ideal if you like to keep up to speed with your digital life whilst out on the go, and the 5 inch display is the perfect size for viewing and using Android apps yet is does not cut out the portability of the device.

3G connectivity is available along with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth which allows for users to have easy access when downloading applications, updating your status, listening to music and generally keeping in contact with friends and family through a variety of different media channels.

The Web browser feels just as natural as using the internet on any standard laptop. This will be good news for students and business professionals who are constantly on-the-go and are in need of a compact yet portable style device; web pages can be viewed as they are seen on a laptop and other apps can be enjoyed at ease.

The Dell Streak uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon solution with integrated 1GHz processor to combine basic functionality, performance, and benefits of a laptop in a pocket friendly size.

“The Dell Streak hits the sweet spot between traditional smartphones and larger-screen tablets,” said Ron Garriques, president, Dell Communication Solutions Group. “Its unique size provides people new ways to enjoy, connect, and navigate their lives.”

Paul-Henri Ferrand, Dell’s Chief Marketing Officer, stated ‘We’ve noticed over the past 24 months that the number of smartphones with bigger screens has increased notably. Back in 2007, the iPhone was one of a few devices with a 3.5-inch display’. Source.

This device will support over-the-air updates including platform upgrades, Adobe Flash 10.1 on Android 2.2 later this year, video chat applications and other software innovations.

Some of the key features that will be present on the Streak include integrated Google Maps with turn-by-turn navigation and Street and Satellite view, easily integrated to social network sites including Facebook and Twitter, a 5 MP camera, VGA front facing camera, removable battery, built-in Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth connectivity options, and also 2GB of internal memory which provides you with plenty of room to take full advantage of the apps from the Android Market.

The latest handset to come from the guys and girls at Sony Ericsson, is the Xperia X10 Mini, which although a large mouthful of words; as the name suggests, is a very little handset. But don’t be fooled into thinking that it’s size is going to reflect it’s functionality. Despite being only 83mm tall and 50mm wide, the Mini is still a fully fledged smartphone boasting Googles Android Operating System; albeit version 1.6 which may not be the latest version, but is still pouring with the functionality that has seen Android OS rocket into the position of becoming one of the most popular operating systems available today, currently only second to Apples iPhone OS; with the gap between the two shrinking at an alarming rate (from Apples point of view anyway).

The X10 Mini boasts a 2.55″ TFT Capacative Touchscreen, a Qualcomm MSM 7227 600MHz processor, 5.0 Megapixel Camera with flash, Micro SD support, HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, which would be a pretty impressive tech spec for a handset twice it’s size. The X10 Mini also benefits from the same Timescape and Mediascape proprietary User Interfaces as it’s older sibling, the Xperia X10, which handle Social Media Integration (Timescape) and offer complete media integration (Mediascape). The two UI’s are both very good at what they do, offering almost unrivalled levels of simplicty and ease of use.

The X10 Mini is available from Free, on a ?15 per month contract which puts it in the direct firing line of the HTC Wildfire, another low-cost smartphone which looks to offer fully fledged smartphone functionaility at a fraction of the price. Which will you choose? For more details about the X10 Mini, and to take a look at the deals available, Click Here.
