We questioned the recent efforts of and it’s recent handsets for their lack of innovation and advancement, as they appeared to be nothing more than slightly jazzed up versions of their predecessors. Don’t get us wrong, the new is an awesome phone, but it’s near on identical looks to the old Curve left us wanting a little more excitement, fireworks and fanfare. What BlackBerry have responded with, certainly doesn’t disappoint.
This is the BlackBerry Playbook, a 7inch tablet running a brand new BlackBerry Tablet OS created in conjunction with recent acquisition, QNX Software; the makers of one of the most reliable and robust operating systems available today (according to the ). What we’re looking at here then, looks set to redeem all of the range short comings, since it would seem that all efforts have been focussed on this.
What do we know about the Playbook? Well, it’ll be a 7 inch tablet, (putting in the firing line of the mighty ) sporting an LCD panel with a 1024 x 600 resolution as well as full multi-touch and gesture support. There’s also a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, Dual HD cameras (3 megapixel front facing and 5 megapixel rear facing) with support for 1080p HD Video recording (and yes, you read that right, 1080p!) There’s also an HDMI out for watching your videos on your HD TV via MicroHDMI as well as a microUSB port. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi take care of connectivity options, although it is said that RIM plan to launch 3G and 4G versions of the Playbook in the future.
Despite the aforementioned specs, the tablet is said to be ultra thin and portable measuring up at just 130mm x 193mm x 10mm, with an overall weight of just 400g; we just hope that they have managed to squeeze a decent sized battery into the Playbook! The bad news? Well, the Playbook isn’t going to be available until early 2011 for our US cousins with a launch here in the UK looking more likely to be in Q2. Keep an eye on the blog for more details as they emerge and why not take a look at the official promo-video below in the meantime. (Source: via )

CNET reports that for the fourth consecutive year, J.D. Power and Associates has ranked Apple highest in customer satisfaction among smartphone manufacturers. The study showed that iPhone scored particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features, and physical design.
Bar none, this is without a doubt the coolest concept we’ve ever seen for a phone, watching the phone flick between it’s screens with nothing more than an effortless swipe of the IR/Bluetooth dongle, which sits flush into the back of the phone when not in use, reminds us of the computers in the Minority Report. And, that is to say, we want one and we want it now.
We’ve seen phone concepts with projectors built in before but never have we seen one that will project both a touch sensitive keyboard and the display all at once, there’s even the option to project what appears to be a full sized keyboard either side of the phone, using the phones screen as a central display. In addition to the Dual-PICO projectors, there’s an 8 megapixel camera, 3.5 mm audio jack, wireless charging and a mini-usb port. Sitting in the back of the phone is a Dongle which doubles both as a bluetooth headset and an IR control for the device.
If we’re not mistaken, the screen renderings show the Mozilla Seabird to be running on but sadly, the Seabird is said to be nothing more than a concept at the moment but given the Android renderings, we’d have money on there being a little more to this story yet. In the meantime, check out the video below and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Archaeologist Steven Ellis and his team are using iPad — with apps like Pages, FMTouch, iDraw, OmniGraffle, and Photos — to capture invaluable historical data in the trenches at Pompeii. Says Ellis, “That my team could both type and draw on the screen, and also examine all previously entered data, made it an ideal single-device solution.”
A video surfaced online yesterday revealing the Mozart and it’s supposed specs, which we’re inclined to believe. The Mozart is said to be gracing us with a 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 CPU, 576 MB RAM, a 3.7 inch WVGA S-LCD screen and an on the back. Which, with the exception of the latter, pretty much means what we’re looking at here is a upgraded Windows Phone 7 touting . We’re also told that the Mozart will have an 8GB internal storage, HSDPA, SRS and Dolby Mobile technology.
The Mozart joins a whole host of leaked Windows Phone 7 handsets, joining the likes of the rumoured , HTC HD7 and to name but a few of the handsets we’ve seen in recent weeks. It still remains to be seen though, whether Windows Phone 7 has moved far away enough from its days as Windows Mobile, (the OS that everybody loved to hate) to actually be a viable alternative to . Take a look at the Video below and let us know what you think.
It seems that RIM - Research In Motion, producers of the phenomenon, are still intent on breaking into the Touchscreen market with the Storm series which sits alongside the ever-popular , and series. The first two Storms were, well, a little off the mark would be one way of saying it. The Storm was certainly different from anything that was available on the market, with it’s click-able ‘SurePress’ screen but was quite quickly dismissed because of a lack of responsiveness amongst quite a few other significant problems.
The followed, which looked to address these issues, with a more responsive screen and a few updates to crucial specs. But, it still struggled to be a viable alternative to the and other smartphones available at the time. You’d have thought then, that if BlackBerry were hoping for a, ‘third times the charm’ with a new Storm, that they’d have done a lot more than a few minor tweaks and a bit of nip/tuck here and there?
Well, early rumours suggest that the Storm 3 would get a 3.7 inch display, 8GB of storage, BlackBerry OS 6, a 5 megapixel camera and mobile Wi-Fi hotspot functionality, which is hardly a ground breaking set of specs in light of recent announcements like the with its 4.3 inch screen and the with its 12 megapixel camera. It’s also said that the SurePress screen lives on, a decision which may ultimately be regretted unless BlackBerry OS 6 has gone a long way to make the OS much more finger friendly. What do you think? Rumours broke yesterday that Social Networking giant Facebook, were producing a dedicated Facebook , a rumour which was later shot down Facebook representatives in a very vague and unconvincing denial. The representatives denied all knowledge of Facebook producing an actual phone, which left it quite open to debate whether Facebook could still be outsourcing the actual hardware from an OEM manufacturer, much in the same way as the Google/ collaboration which produced the Nexus One and instead focussing their efforts on producing the software.
The leak points towards two very high level employees working on the project, namely Joe Hewitt - a software engineer who has previously worked on the creation of the Firefox Browser and the Facebook application. The second man being Matthew Papakipos - the director of the HTML5 Open Web Platform efforts at Google before leaving and joing Facebook; which would certainly seem to support the rumour. It’s also said that the project is unknown to most Facebook employees, again something which seems perfectly feasible and quite likely.
We don’t know anything about the phone itself nor who will be producing it if it does indeed exist, but assuming it does, we’d be very interested to see Facebook’s take on a phone and how they think a phone should function. It could turn out that this is nothing more than a platform for developing a more integrated Facebook Application which can be rolled out across , , et al. What do you think it’ll be?
