Despite the efforts in the shape of the E and the , Acer is still yet to prove itself as a dominant force in the market despite its success in the laptop/PC area. The Stream is an awesome piece of kit, on paper at least, but as it stands is an under-appreciated device that hasn’t quite had the limelight it perhaps deserves.
However, that hasn’t worried Acer in the slightest nor has it stopped them producing another touting handset, seemingly. This is the Acer Liquid Metal, which is said to be positioned somewhere in between the E and the Stream in the Liquid series. So, that’s likely to put it directly in contention with the likes of the which means that it had better have a pretty impressive spec list as well as a reasonable price tag if it wants even a glimmer of hope of establishing itself.
Looking at the specs we know so far, the Liquid Metal doesn’t look likely to disappoint, we’re talking an aluminium/metallic body, camera with flash, an 800 MHz Qualcomm processor, 512Mb RAM and 512 MB of ROM as well as a 3.7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen display (WVGA resolution and support for 16m colours). There’s also said to be Bluetooth 3.0 and Dolby Mobile Technology. But, the real feather in the Liquid Metals cap? It’s said to be shipping with 2.2 Froyo albeit with Acer’s proprietary skin, Shell 4.0, on top. If it turns out that this handset also touts Wi-Fi, HSDPA and a resonable price tag, Acer could really be on to a winner. (Source: )
Announcements of new are coming thick and fast, we’ve had the , and to name three of the most recent. Now we have another looking join in on the Android Action, this handset though, comes from a name you wouldn’t necessarily associate with mobile phones; Acer. This isn’t Acer’s first shot at a , remember the ? Anyone? Thought not, but it appears it now has a successor, and this looks alot more like the handset we’d hoped for previously…
Presenting the Acer Stream, which has been dubbed as a mobile entertainment dream machine. As far as specs go, here’s what we know: It’ll launch with Android 2.1 (?clair), it will also have a 3.7 Inch AMOLED display with a 2000:1 contrast ratio which without going into the gory details, is very good. There’s also a Qualcomm SnapDragon 1GHz processor lurking under the hood joined by 512MB of RAM which will take care of any day to day tasks without breaking sweat.
The camera is a unit, which seems to be fast becoming the norm in , although, the Stream has the ability to record 720p HD video, straight out of the box. There’s also a mini HDMI port for linking the Acer Stream up to your HDTV to watch the 720p videos in all their HD glory. There’s also 2GB of internal storage and a rumour that the Stream will ship with an 8GB MicroSD card in the box, which takes care of any worries about not having enough space to store your media. If you’re still worried however, fear not, the Stream supports MicroSD storage up to 32GB.
We can’t forget to mention the FM Radio, GPS and what has been referred to as an HTC Sense style User Interface which runs on top of the Android Operating System. It is said that the UI will let you switch between photos and video in a 3D interface that will also apparently carry through to 3D gaming.
With no details about pricing or release date yet, we’re left to deliberate whether the Stream will be the beginning of a fruitful second attempt at breaking into the market or whether it will wash up on the banks of ‘easily forgotten phones’ alongside it’s predecessor.
If you’re after an powered , you really are spoilt for choice these days, with great offerings from and as well as exciting new launches from and on the horizon.
