What is iOS?

As Apple’s operating system for their smartphone and tablet devices, iOS was the first major smartphone platform to hit the UK that really appealed to the mass market. Apple found a way to make things as simple as possible with a very easy to use touch gesture experience.

Unlike Android OS, iOS is exclusive to Apple mobile devices such as the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S. Apple’s iOS software also powers their range of tablet PCs such as the Apple iPad 2 and the New Apple iPad which launched last month. Future iOS devices such as the Apple iPhone 5 are guaranteed to use the latest version of iOS within the handsets.

Apple’s iOS operating system platform is extremely fast and reliable. It works seamlessly with less clutter, which you might see with other popular operating systems. The iOS platform has remarkable features such as a fast web browser, multi-tasking and enhanced social networking integration; so you can view and share content effortlessly across websites such as Facebook. With Apple’s own cloud synchronisation, iCloud features let you view your favourite multimedia across a range of your personal devices.

Design and Features of Apple iOS

iOS features a remarkably sleek and stylish user interface. When you power up your iOS device you’re presented with a lock screen. The lock screen prevents you from accidently calling someone in your pocket. To open the device you have to swipe your finger across the screen.

From the lock screen to the home screen, Apple iOS uses a very sophisticated swipe-touch home screen feature. You can house a number of app icons on different home screen views. You can even create folders and store apps here on multiple home screen views. The iOS platform lets you be a flexible as you like.

Simply tapping on an app will launch it, and within seconds it’s ready for you to use. Apps will be loaded into the background which means you can refer to it later and not have to wait for it to load every time. Double clicking on the home button will allow you multitask with your apps. You can also completely close down apps from here. Apple iOS really makes things simple for you. The experience and journey that you take really is something special.

iOS App Store

What is the iOS App Store?

What makes Apple iOS so successful is the growing success of its App Store. The App Store is Apple’s equivalent of Google Play; an archive of applications, games, multimedia, music and films available to download onto your iDevice. The App Store recently passed 25 billion downloads this month, making it the most popular app market of all time for smartphones. With close to 600,000 apps available for the Apple iPhone and iPad range, several of these are available as free downloads. The store is very easy to navigate and the portal has a very clear and simple interface with the ability to search for apps by category, top free and top paid apps.

Apple iOS is a great device to use and the iOS software is great fun and full of features that will blow you away! Find out about our latest Apple iPhone 4S deals.

Look at the back of your iPhone. Like most things around you, it says, “Assembled in China”. Not a big shock, but due to the size of this factory (Foxconn), when bad things happen, like suicides and explosions, they get more media attention. I’m all for the audits and making things right and so here is ABC’s video of their tour and what they saw:

Firmware Update 5.0.1

Apple recently released an update to the 5.0 software. The first issue they tried to address is battery life. I was defiantly having this issue on my iPhone 4S (AT&T) as my battery would be drained by about noon every day. I am a heavy user but my iPhone 4 always made it all day on one charge. This recent update did help and now I’m up to about 5:00pm each day. Apple has stated they are still working on more battery issues.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

The next issue Apple addressed was adding multitasking gestures to the iPad 1. There is a hack in Cydia for this but now it’s not needed. You can just turn in on in your Settings app. Here’s a quick video of how these work:

Next is documents in iCloud were not syncing back to devices correctly and were even getting completely wiped out. Not kewl! I lost a lot of mine but between email and my iTunes backup, I restored them. Here’s an article explaining how I restored them. I don’t have a way to test this now so let us know if this helped you out.

Last, voice recognition has been improved for Australian users. Again, I don’t have a way to test this but if you feel this has or has not been improved, please share in the comments.

Apple Invites Press to October 4th iPhone Event

Most likely, Apple will be announcing both the iPhone 5 and the new iOS firmware at their October 4th event. The invitation to the press is titled, “Let’s talk iPhone.” This leads me to believe there will be voice to text built into iOS 5. I’ve tested it out a little using the updated Target app. It seems to recognize what I say really well. It would be great to have it integrated into the software as an option when typing in all apps.
