Now before you read too much into this and start to worry, don’t. This isn’t the news that Microsoft have abandoned plans to release a series of phones running their impressive new operating system. No, this is simply the news that Microsoft have buckled under imense pressure and dropped the word ‘Series’ from the lengthy title of the new OS meaning that when the first wave of handsets launch at the end of 2010, they will be running Windows Phone 7.

First unveiled at Mobile World Congress in February and despite the slight disadvantage of having no hardware on show, Windows Phone 7 Series was met by almost unversal praise, showing off a new user friendly ethos that seems a world away from Windows Mobile of old. Our (and many of your) only gripe was the name; it was just too darn long. And so it seems Microsoft are leaving nothing to chance, making (in our opinion at least) the correct deision and shortening the name to something easier to get your mouth around.

So, Windows Phone 7 Series becomes Windows Phone 7. But what of the handsets that will be running the OS? Well, we’ve still yet to see any official announcements but that hasn’t stopped a handful of key manufacturers commiting their future to the new OS. HTC have previously announced their intent to bring a Windows Phone 7 device to market later this year whilst LG, Samsung and Asus have all demonstrated pre-release hardware at a recent electronics expo. LG were first to show their Windows Phone 7 hand with a touchscreen/ slide out QWERTY device (codenamed Panther) not dissimilar in design to the Motorola Milestone whilst Samsung appeared to have squeezed the new OS into an i8910 HD (which originally ran Symbian). Asus (who are rumoured to be behind Microsoft’s own brand Windows Phone 7 device similar to the HTC/ Google relationship for the Nexus One) were demonstrating a classic touchscreen device.

How these devices will differ from their pre-release counterparts when they actually get the official treatment remains to be seen but with the first wave set to hit shelves before the end of the year, we shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out. Keep an eye on the blog for all the latest news.
