Last month, Google revealed that their total number of downloaded Android apps had . The largest slice of the app pie went to games, with a staggering 25.6% of all apps downloaded, that’s 2,560 million games downloaded so far. Phew. Here’s our rundown of the top 5 free Android games available on the market at the moment.
5 – Zombie Dash
At the time of writing, this game holds the number 1 spot on the freebie Android games chart, having toppled the mighty Angry Birds from its pedestal. The secret of the Android games success is down to two things. The first aspect is its simplicity – you have two moves at your disposal, jump and shoot. The second aspects is zombies. People like zombies. Especially when you can shoot them. When jump and shoot is combined with zombies, you have a winning formula, as 5 million Android games downloads have so far confirmed.

4 – Pool Master Pro
Pool has always been a popular game subject whatever the platform, and the Android games version continues the trend with its 10 million downloads. Offering practice modes, as well as options to play against a friend or the computer, simply add a pint of lager and bowl of stale peanuts to recreate your local pool hall as accurately as possible without ever leaving the house.

3 – Fruit Slice
There has been much debate over the two fruit based slicing games currently available. Fruit Slice and offer a very similar setup; various items of fresh fruit fly through the air as you swipe the touchscreen to split each item of your potential five-a-day. The plentiful produce is occasionally punctuated by Looney Tunes style bombs, which you have to avoid or its game over. It may sound dull, but it’s hugely addictive stuff. On the Android games chart, Fruit Ninja has the highest placing (although they both have 10 million downloads), but we suspect that this is just down to it having the better name. Ninjas are cool – ‘nuff said. Judged on the games themselves, however, Fruit Slice is the clear victor. It offers more games on the app itself, much better graphics, and a smoother gameplay. If you have a spare fifteen minutes to waste though, either of the two will pass the time nicely.

2 – Words With Friends
This game is essentially Scrabble, but slower, which doesn’t necessarily sound too exciting, but stay with us on this one. The slow nature of the game is essentially its unique selling point, as it’s great for taking out on your afternoon break, playing your go, and then forgetting about it until later. The game consists of a Scrabble style set-up where you make words with the lettered tiles you are given, trying to use the double/triple letter/word squares to hit maximum points. As the title suggests, you can connect with your favourite social networking site to challenge your friends, or select random player in order to take on a mystery opponent from anywhere in the world. It would appear that ‘Words with Friends or Stangers’ just wasn’t as catchy a title. Either way, it has 10 million downloads to date.

..And number 1 of our Android games – Angry Birds
Probably the most popular smartphone game ever, with a mere 50 million downloads at the time of writing, our number 1 spot goes to those perturbed avians, the Angry Birds. It’s a total mystery as to why they are quite so angry, or why they take out their frustration by loading themselves into slingshots in order to systematically assassinate a race of green disembodied pigs with a penchant for flimsy architecture, but they just do. Spawning a series of themed sequels and special editions, such as the Halloween and Rio editions, and their very own merchandising line in the real world, the Angry Birds seem pretty unstoppable… especially if you’re a pig with no legs..

A PSP Phone is something that has long been talked about and rumoured; the closest we’ve come to seeing anything close to a fully fledged ‘Playstation Phone’ was the , with it’s Remote Play functions which unfortunately, were nothing more than media sharing capabilities. Well, Sony Ericsson have seemingly decided to have another stab at it and would appear that this is the PlayStation Phone we’ve all been waiting for and have seen rumoured so many times before.
The PSP Phone very much resembles the PSP Go with it’s slide-out controls; including the obligatory square, circle, triangle and cross buttons, a D-Pad, what appears to be two optical trackpads replacing what would normally be the analogue sticks, shoulder triggers and the Start/Select buttons.
Where this starts to get really interesting though, is when we look at the phone aspect of this device, if the images are to be believed, it’s running albeit with a customised Sony skin on top. We can see the four obligatory Android hardware keys (Home, Menu, Back and Search) sitting just below the screen as well as a lock screen which will be familiar to anyone that has used a vanilla Android 2.2 device. Other features include a camera and LED flash on the back and a front-facing camera too.
Although, we’re still not 100% convinced by this, it’s either a fake or very early prototype; notice the lack of PlayStation branding, a mysterious ‘S’ in the centre of the controls and even more strangely, on-screen references to ‘A’ and ‘B’ buttons for Enter and Back. We really do hope this is the real deal and is simply an early prototype but let us know your thoughts in the comments section below. (Source: )

News has broken that has lost a court case in which Mirror Worlds are seeking up to $625 million in damages, the lawsuit in concerned with a copyright to display documents on computer screens. No doubt Apple will appeal this decision, delaying final verdict for a couple more years.
It seems to be an increasing trend these days for companies to sue each other, so much so that ‘Information is Beautiful’ have come up with the below info-graphic detailing exactly who is suing who and what for. Check it out, you’ll see that Apple are on the receiving end of quite alot of lawsuits, whilst appear to be a great deal of suing; not surprising in light of the recent loss of Nokia’s market share.
According to an analyst from the Kaufman Brothers, Shaw Wu, Apple are reportedly working on two versions of a new ; the information is said to come from a contact within Apples iPhone supply chain. It has been said that Apple will produce another “perfectly sized” (Steve Jobs words, not ours) 3.5 inch screen device as well as an entry level smaller device. We can almost categorically say that this will not happen, the words entry level and Apple are words which have never been seen before in the same sentence. And if Apple CEO Steve Jobs has his way, they never will.
simply do not want to operate in an entry-level market, their entire product offering is made up of high margin, aspirational products. A move into entry level offerings by Apple would completely undermine the brand image that has been built over the years, in the same way that Ferrari’s would, if they were to start selling cheap family hatchbacks. It’s just not going to happen. What do you think? Does the increasing threat from neccessitate a more diverse offering, or should Apple continue in their age old fashion? Let us know in the comments below.
It seems that could soon be receiving another feather in it’s cap, this particular feather though could prove to be a golden one. Gaming software giant Electronic Arts, has said that it has been taking a ‘hard look’ at Android, particularly with regard to recent reports which have depicted Android becoming the #2 mobile phone operating system as early as 2014, with a 25% overall market share, where a can only expect 11%. EA’s CFO (Eric Brown) also went on to say that “There’s a lot to happen in the future in Android, and we’re trying to position our mobile business to take advantage of that trend.”
The long running argument between Android and fans has always been and probably always will be, apps. Androids argument has always been around the amount of free apps that it offers in the Android Market where Apple fans are shouting about the higher quality and the sheer volume of apps available in the app store. Cutting a long story short, the fact remains that the Apple app store does still have the better quality ‘big name/branded’ apps, especially when looking at games, although by a rapidly decreasing margin.
The move into Android by EA would be a considerable blow in this argument, especially when you consider that the game titles you could expect to hit Android include Tiger Woods Golf, Need For Speed, John Madden Football, FIFA Football, Tetris and Monopoly. This also comes shortly after Rovio, makers of the #1 selling iPhone game ‘Angry Birds’, have also released a beta version of their smash hit game into the Android Market. The battle really is beginning to heat up, let us know which way you think it’ll go in the comments section below, or to take a look at our and get in on the action, .
Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, was treated to a VIP demonstration of a rather a peculiar looking that has since been dubbed a dual-screen, 4G, touting handset. Now, we’re not suggesting for a moment that this is something we’re likely to see anytime soon; as you can see in the video below, the phone is clearly a very, very early prototype. However, the concept behind the prototype is intruiging if not a little confusing; we’re not quite sure how the two screens are both of use and struggle to see how they would appeal, unless what we’re looking at is a dual-sim phone with a screen controlling each sim.
Our Russian isn’t really up to scratch, so we’re going by the loose translations that our floating around, but if you should happen to speak Russian, feel free to correct the translations of the video in the comments below.
