Symbian ^4 screenshots revealed!

We’ve yet to even see the finished version of Symbian ^3 in action with the Nokia N8, Nokia’s debut Symbian ^3 device, not launching until September but the folks over at the Symbian Foundation have already released screenshots of what its successor will look like.

Whilst Symbian ^4 isn’t set to launch until the end of this year (and it will be early 2011 before it actually finds its way on to actual devices) the screenshots released as part of an emulator for developers do show off some new information including a relocated menu/ application launcher, adjustments to the signal, battery and notifications bar and new contextual pop-up windows.

As found on Symbian ^3, ^4 will also feature the dot icons that indicate which of the multiple home screens a user is currently looking at. From the new images, we can see that users can customise Symbian ^4 devices by adding at least 7 home screen pages.

Whilst the screenshots do look like another step in the right direction for Symbian, it’s worth noting that in 6 to 8 months time, the competition, including the likes of Android, iOS (which powers the iPhone) and the new Windows Phone 7 OS, could all have taken substantial leaps forward in terms of usability and user interface.
